When you are teaching students in high school the action that you deal with mostly is inappropriate behavior as well as reduced study skills. Most kids go through behavioral issues, and it is part of growing up. It is not the same for everyone for some it’s more than for others. Behavior is one of the ways you can differentiate btw the special one and the regular ones. Lets see how classroom behavior can be maintained.
Tell the students what your behavior expectations are about. At the start of every school year tell the students what you expect. As from the first day of school come up with rules that will guide the class. The standards should be established together with the students and make sure that they become part of the class. The rules should be accompanied by signs that will be used to warn someone who is making a mistake. Look closely to see if the laws are being developed.
Make sure that their no inappropriate behavior in the class by checking their action and giving them feedback. If you have a student who is continuously having lousy behavior keep a close eye on them and also avoid it at an early stage. Use severe voice and gestures to remind a student who is involved in bad behavior. Rewarding ethical behavior is something you should always do in a classroom.
The practices will be followed if you reinforce then using social, edible, negative, tangible and activity reinforcement. Instead of appreciating good behavior with physical reward one could use tokens. For a later day the tokens can be used as backup reinforcement. If the students are more advanced in age you should use contingency contracts. These types of deals are a decision that both you and the student agree on, saying what reward they will get if they have good behavior. Behavior can also be taught by shaping, shaping involves taking steps in showing good behavior. This technique can either be used to guide new behavior or reinforce the ones that already exist.
Use a role model to explain the sort of behavior you are expecting. In order for the rest of the students to understand when one of them has good behavior use them as an example. If you are working on a specific student make sure you students their age are around to listen and learn what are your expectations. If you do this it will work even for the students meaning you will have achieved more. The students should take part in the program of improving their behavior by creating goals, preventing situations that could affect their behavior, assessing themselves and knowing how they should be rewarded for their excellent response. Parents should not be left out when it comes to behavior management programs.
